Federation Point sits at the western end of Manly Cove, where the old Manly Pavilion rock platforms provide entry into a gentle coastal traverse that runs west toward Delwood Beach in 4–5 m of water. The dive is a traverse rather than a destination — the interest comes from following the rocky ledge and kelp foreshore westward, observing the species that inhabit the rock faces and sandy patches along the route, and turning back when gas or distance warrants. The terrain is modest but consistently productive: rock ledges, kelp patches, and seaweed beds hold nudibranchs, small octopus, and the range of harbour fish species that characterise this stretch of Manly Cove.
The site is one of the shallowest in the Manly area and functions well as a first-dive or training site for divers who want a low-pressure environment to practice skills before moving to more demanding terrain. The depth of 4–5 m keeps everything within easy range and means gas management is not a meaningful constraint — a single tank provides well over an hour of bottom time at this depth, allowing a slow, unhurried traverse with plenty of time to stop and search the reef faces carefully. The traverse connects to the Delwood Beach reef to the west, allowing the dive to be extended in that direction for those who want more distance.
Tide sensitivity is high at 4/5 — the optimal window is incoming 2nd half and high tide only. Visibility averages around 7 m in the best conditions and drops meaningfully outside the tidal window. Runoff sensitivity is 3/5; allow four to five days after significant rainfall before visiting. The site is well protected at prot_lvl 4/5 and swell is not a factor here. The key safety consideration is boat and ferry traffic — Federation Point sits directly adjacent to the Manly Wharf approach and heading east past the swimming nets into the ferry channel is extremely dangerous. Stay west of the nets at all times.
There are no fees. Public restrooms, showers, and extensive cafes and shops are at Manly Wharf and The Corso. Federation Point also makes a natural component of a longer traverse dive combined with Delwood Beach to the west. Entry at the Pavilion, traverse to Delwood, and exit at Delwood gives a continuous reef profile across both sites in a single dive — a useful way to cover more terrain than either site offers individually and to experience the gradual character change in the reef as it moves away from the cove toward the more open harbour foreshore. The route stays in 4–7 m throughout, making gas management simple, and the two sites combined provide enough distance for a comfortable 45-minute dive at a slow, productive pace.
