Dive Site Guide

Gordon's Bay is the only dive site in Sydney with a dedicated underwater nature trail — a marked chain route that winds through the bay, guiding divers past the key reef features without the need for compass navigation or prior site knowledge. It is one of the most beginner-friendly shore dives in the city: a calm, sheltered bay, gentle topography, straightforward access, and a maximum depth of 14 m that keeps the dive comfortably within Open Water limits. Despite its accessibility it holds genuinely impressive marine life. Eastern Blue Gropers are resident and frequently approachable to within a metre. Port Jackson and Wobbegong sharks are regular sightings. Rays move across the sandy patches, nudibranchs appear on the reef walls, and cuttlefish are commonly encountered along the boulder fields throughout the year.

The underwater terrain combines sandy patches, a rocky wall along the bay edge, and boulder fields that provide structure and shelter for the resident species. Visibility averages around 7 m — typical for this section of coast — and the bay's orientation means it holds up reasonably well across most conditions. Tide sensitivity is minimal at 1/5 with all phases optimal, so tidal timing does not constrain when you dive. The site is fully exposed at protection level 1/5 and the wave limit is 0.6 m, making flat conditions the governing requirement for a comfortable entry and exit.

At high tide the entry is easier and the bay holds slightly more depth, which tends to improve clarity and gives the nature trail more overhead clearance in the shallower sections. A rip current can be present in the deeper part of the bay — exit sideways rather than fighting it directly. Strong swell can push around the point, making the perimeter of the bay rougher than the centre suggests, and the exit via Clovelly Pool is only viable during certain months and hours — check the specific conditions and warning notes before planning that route.

Gordon's Bay is also well suited to night diving — the calm, sheltered water and the resident species make it one of the more relaxed night dive options in the eastern suburbs, and the nature trail chain provides an easy navigation reference in the dark. Cuttlefish are particularly active after dark and the boulder fields reveal invertebrate species that are rarely visible during daylight hours.

There are no fees to dive Gordon's Bay. Restrooms and a cafe are a few minutes walk at Clovelly Pool. Dive Centre Bondi is the nearest shop at 3.8 km (8 min), with Pro Dive Alexandria at 9.7 km (20 min).

Dive Brief

While the underwater nature trail is a good introduction, a more rewarding dive follows this scenic loop or continues around the point to exit at Clovelly Pool (*check Clovelly Pool warning first). For the loop, enter and head south to ~8 m depth, picking up the wall and following it west. This section is rich in macro life, gorgonian fans, and vibrant nudibranchs — use your torch to reveal the colours, and take your time — it's one of Gordon’s Bay highlights. As the wall ends, turn left into the deeper valley and follow a 122° heading. A gentle current often assists here, making for a relaxed drift. When large boulders appear on your left in shallower water, ascend to ~6 m and explore the boulder field, home to friendly blue groper “Blueey” and, in summer, schools of hula and scad. Return northwest, and at trail markers 24 or 25, turn north to exit. If continuing around the point, proceed only in low swell if not experienced with surge. Depending on air remaining, you may head east to 10–15 m to explore the Clovelly drop-off or just keep heading around the point in shallower water. *Exit via the Clovelly ocean pool shallows.
Entry/exit can be hazardous at low/mid tide with > 0.5 m swell. Rip current may be present, exit it to the sides. Strong swell may be present around the point. Exit at Clovelly Pool only during certain months/hours, see Clovelly Pool warning.
